It’s officially That Time of Year again.  The time when children are allowed to delve a little too far into the dressing-up box and are forgiven for demanding sweets from their seniors with scant regard for their ‘p’s’ and ‘q’s’.  So dig out your old witch’s mask and fish out those face-paints, because Halloween is coming to town and a casual dress code is not an option… Read more

Christmas gift ideas – Santa hats at the ready, the Big Man’s on his way…

On a chilly Christmas Eve many moons ago, my mother wrapped me up to the eyeballs in clashing knitwear and whispered that we were ‘going somewhere very exciting’.  ‘Somewhere very exciting’ normally translating as ‘Nana’s house’, I displayed a very wary enthusiasm.

Having been no more than around four years old, my memories of meeting the Big Man are hazy at best.  Apparently I asked for Kerplunk or, failing that, a kitten.  As an adult, it is all too easy to forget quite how excited you used to get at the thought of a rotund stranger slipping down the chimney in the dead of night.

My mother maintains that Christmas only ‘came alive’ for her as an adult once she had children.  Maybe that’s why she’s beaming ear-to-ear in each of the hastily-taken snapshots from our own meeting with Santa.  Whatever your reasons, nothing brings Christmas to life better than a meeting with a certain Mr Claus…

New at Alton Towers – Sharkbait Reef

alton_towers_ticketsAlton Towers have opened another fantastic new attraction, brought to you in association with SEA LIFE! With 25 locations around the world (including all centres that we sell SEA LIFE tickets for) they really are the experts in all things fish (and sharks, and rays, and seahorses…) and now they’ve brought their brand of marine expertise to Alton Towers.

What makes the Alton Towers SEA LIFE! centre extra special? The theme: Pirates!

Gone are the gallery-style collections of oblong tanks, and in their place comes displays of all shapes and sizes offering astonishingly close views of an array of fantastic sea creatures through windows which are flat, curved and even bubble-shaped!

Join Captain Black and crew to discover over 300 species of aquatic life under the wreck of the galleon in Mutiny Bay or dip your fingers in the tropical pool and let Shrimp give you a manicure (tidy results not guaranteed).  The very best part of all this aquatic discovery? It’s included in the price of your Alton Towers tickets!

“How do I plan a great birthday day out for a teenage boy?”

Dear Annabella

Over the past year and a half I’ve noticed it has become increasingly difficult to plan days out that both I and my 13 year old son enjoy. With his 14th birthday coming up next month I really don’t know what to do for a birthday day out. Ideally I’d like to spend less than £100. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Mary, Worcester

Dear Mary

Teenage boys are, generally speaking, strange things. Uncommunicative, liable to want to hang around with entirely unsuitable friends, and given to an inexplicable dislike of a nice cup of tea and a sit down as an evenings entertainment.

Thus they are, at best, terrible companions for a day out.

Today, however, you are in luck as I have found several days out to tempt even the most taciturn and ungracious teenager. A trip to Alton Towers might convince him to get off ‘Bookface’ or whatever it is for 5 minutes, and Buyagift’s Print n Go tickets make it a cinch to arrange. There’s even a selection of gardens for you to enjoy while he’s busy with the rollercoasters.

If he has a more inquisitive turn of mind then a trip to Whipsnade Zoo to see the lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) might be a good choice. There might even be a kindred spirit in the form of the sloths.

If neither of these appeal then indulge his inner monkey at one of the Go Ape! centres around the country. Just make sure he doesn’t start swinging from the chandeliers when you go home.

Best, Annabella
