Father’s Day competition winner!

June 18, 2009 by Max

Fathers Day CompetitionLadies and gentlemen, we have a winner!

Our Father’s Day competition was drawn to a close on the stroke of midnight last night and we’ve been sorting through all the advice from Dads that poured in.  There’s been some good, some bad, some strange, some very funny, some downright bizarre and a lot of people warned that they should never, ever, eat yellow snow.  Thanks to everyone who entered: we all feel a little bit more wise after poring through the accumulated wisdom of the nation’s Dads.

There were so many good entries that the only way to judge the competition was to pull the name out of a hat.  And by hat we mean a randomly selected name off our Giant Spreadsheet of Advice. And so our fabulous Father’s Day gift of a Single Seater Drive at Prestwold Hall goes to:

Cassidy Tucker of East Lothian

And the advice her Dad gave her?

“Don’t follow in my footsteps, I walk into walls!”

Congratulations Cassidy, we hope your Dad has a great time driving his single seater (and stays away from the walls!).

We got so many good entries that we simply had to share them. Honorable mentions go to those entries containing advice from Dads that either made us laugh or were the most heartfelt:

  1. “When cooking dinner for a member of the opposite sex, do pasta bolognese rather than spaghetti bolognese as it makes less mess” – Claire Lewis
  2. “Never touch the end of a soldering iron to test how hot it is” – Chris Evans
  3. Mirror, signal, manoeuvre… he said it when we were about to walk up the aisle and it cracked me up so I forgot my nerves and we entered the Church with me grinning broadly” – Robin Kelly
  4. “When you fall down the toilet in life, make sure you come up smelling of roses” – Nicola McAllister
  5. “If you meet somebody that doesn’t like ANY sport at all there is something a bit funny about them” – Rachael Turvey
  6. “Beware of wiggly things” – Caroline Gossage
  7. “A crow with wet wings never flies at night” – (er….) – John Brown
  8. “Do what you like – just don’t tell your mother!” – Liz Gordon-Smith
  9. “Never trust a man that drives a car and wears a hat” – Brendan Walsh
  10. “Keep facing the sun and the shadows will fall behind you – keep happy and nothing will bother you” – Edward Tanner

And finally, an epic story from Martin Davies, whose dad who told him:

“Remember, your best brake is your gears!” This bit of advice was repeated to me long before I knew what it meant, but years later, a newly qualified driver, struggling in my first car through snow and blizzards on a lane in the Yorkshire moors, these words came back to me, and helped me come through – shaking but in one piece!

Now that is some genuinely good advice!

Everyone who took part in the competition should check their e-mail over the next few hours for a little thank-you from Buyagift that should make getting a good Father’s Day gift a bit easier!
