“help me propose properly…”

Dear Annabella

I’ve seen all of the great days out and things you have on the buyagift main site, and I want to organise something really amazing to propose to my long term girlfriend, Jenny.

She’s such a great person and very romantic, I know she’s probably been dreaming about how she’ll be proposed to since she was little.

Jenny’s always arranging cool days out for me and stuff that I’d like to do, how can I make sure that she gets the engagement of her dreams?

Ben from Essex

Dear Ben

You are right to suppose that for women, getting engaged is a serious business. Indeed my own husband had to propose several times, but I was particularly coy.

Butter her up with some nice red roses and fill her glass with some fine Champagne. (Buy several bottles – girls like a good tipple.) After drinks, set off for your surprise destination – hopefully she is eager to accompany you. If not, I would hesitate about proposing.

I suggest you whisk her off for an all inclusive hotel break, sufficiently far away that it is impossible for her to get home without your car. The Rivenhall Hotel in Essex offers dinner, a double room and breakfast for two – propose over your gourmet evening meal and then retire to your room to admire the ring.

Do let me know how it goes, and don’t leave out any of the details.

In anticipation, Annabella

“Dear Annabella, I want to get my sister something with my pocket money”

Dear Annabella

My sister is going to be eighteen and I want to get her a present but don’t know what she would like, can you help me choose something?

I have saved up twenty five pounds to spend on her present.

thanks Annabella

Joel, aged 10

Dear Joel,

It is very kind of you to spend your hard-saved pocket money on your sister, and very thoughtful to write in and ask for advice. I have arranged for my friends here at the buyagift office to send you a special present along with the usual goodies – a premium teabag, signed by me.

For your sister, I suggest a Crystal Choice Voucher, which lets her choose between 20 different experience days and hobbies, and even better costs exactly the amount you wanted to spend.

With a voucher like this, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know exactly what she would enjoy, she can go for a manicure, enjoy a day at the races or even go on a football stadium tour if she wants to, although I doubt any sensible young woman would choose a football experience day over a makeover.

If only all brothers were as thoughtful as you. Mine still pulls my hair.

All the best, Annabella

“Dear Annabella, my dad’s retiring and I want to get him doing something adventurous…”

Dear Annabella

I always knew when it came time for my dad to retire he’d find himself at a loose end – he worked ten hours a day for fourty three years and often over parts of the weekend.

Now he’s got all this spare time on his hands and he doesn’t know what to do with himself, at the moment he is moping around pretending to read books and talking about taking up painting tiny plastic models of cars.

If I don’t find a hobby for him to do that actually gets him out of the house for a while I think my mum might go mental, as he keeps following her around whilst she is trying to do stuff.

Any ideas?

Katie from London

Katie,

Your father is quite disorientated after his change of pace, and needs a hobby. This is natural after retirement as males get attached to their professions. On the day my husband retired he brought home his desk, its contents, and several batches of company paper for our personal correspondance.

Things have gone quite far enough if your father is already considering becoming a serial model kit maker, it is time to get him out of the house and onto the green, with one of our golf experience days.

A driving experience would really blow the cobwebs away and show him what he’s been missing out on whilst cooped up in that dreary old office. Perhaps a Subaru rally car thrill or Ferrari Thrill at Silverstone to be more specific. You could go along and watch, on the proviso that he provided a good sized thermos of tea, of course.

Do try and be understanding, he is at a crossroads, but be very firm about the model kits or who knows, it may lead to Hornby train sets next.
